Brake Caliper Repairs and Common Faults

What is it?

Brake calipers are essential to your car’s ability to stop and are one of the most important brake parts. Brake calipers are a vital part of your vehicle’s braking system. Brake calipers squeeze the brake pads against the surface of the brake rotor to slow or stop the vehicle.

Where is it located?

The outboard brake pads are on the outside of the rotors (toward the curb) and the inboard brake pads on the inside (toward the vehicle). The brake caliper fits over the rotor much like a clamp.

Indications of faults:

A pulling condition when applying the brakes.

The harder the braking the harder the car pulls.

Illuminated brake warning light.

Common faults:

A couple common problems would be a binding caliper or one that develops a leak.
