Camshaft Common Faults and Repairs

What is it?

In an internal combustion engine the camshaft is used to operate poppet valves.

Where is it located?

The camshaft is located beneath the engine and they are fitted in a variety of conformations.

Indicators of faults:

Poor idling.
Frequent stalling.
Drop in engine power.
Bad fuel mileage.
Abnormal acceleration.

Common faults:

Camshaft failure.
Incorrect valve spring pressure.
Old lifters on a new cam.
Improper break in.
Lobe wear.
